"During his visit to France in 1717, Peter I, Tsar of Russia, received as a gift from the Duke of Antin, Director General of the King's Buildings, two magnificent watercolor albums representing the gardens of Versailles and Marly. These albums had been produced under the direction of the French ornamentalist Pierre Lepautre, in the last years of the reign of Louis XIV, between 1711 and 1713. These manuscripts are kept in Saint Petersburg, in the Library of the Academy of Sciences of Russia. 
 
Unknown in France and never published, these documents are of extreme importance for the knowledge of the gardens of Louis XIV, at the end of the achievements of André Le Nôtre and Jules Hardouin-Mansart."
